‘Clothes style and fashion have long been recognised as the key elements in young people’s expressions, exploration and the making of their individual and collective identities’. Paul Willis, 1990

Adolescents take past cultures and create new cultures. Fashion, music and style are dominant areas of our 'new cultures'. But why is this a bad thing? Yes in some way we are all manipulated by the media into striving after unrealistic ideals that are represented through fashion and music, but I am not entirely convinced that this is necessarily a bad thing. If our individual choices are not manipulated by the Media, then there would be some other factor that would effect us, but who is to say that it would be any better?

Fashion and music cannot be blamed for anorexia, child sexualisation or any of the other problems related to the media. Maybe people should start looking closer to home instead of instantly blaming the magazine or that TV programme.
